Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the concept of limiting and excess reagents. It demonstrates this by having the entire class create a precipitation reaction using different volumes of Cu(NO3)2 and KI, and using instruments such as the desiccator and the centrifuge. The entire class data was then analyzed. Procedure Three test tubes were obtained and labeled. The weight of test tube 1 was recorded, and 4mL of Cu(NO3)2 was combined with 3mL of KI in the same test tube. After the centrifuge, the supernatant was placed in the two other test tubes using a pipette. The precipitate was washed, dried, and then measured for its weight.
