Ch. 4 – pt. 2 – Measurement Issues in Trait Psychology Measurement Issues - Carelessness o Detect using an infrequency scale (Items, among others, that most ppl answer the same way. o If they answer different, they are being Carless - Fatigue o Survey is too long, so they give participants a break. o Counterbalance (reverse orders) o - Faking on questions o Scale, that if answered in a particular way, suggest faking. o They try to appear better or worse than reality. - Response Sets o Acquiescence – agreeing, regardless of content Reverse-key some items (phrase the question the other way) o Extreme responding – tendency to give endpoint responses (either 1 or 10 instead of in-between) Force choice (“place these in order of importance”) o Social desirability – respond in ways that make them appear socially attractive/likable Ensure anonymity/confidentially Encourage honesty Measure socially desirable responding and correct Don’t use items that correlate with SD/leading Q’s
