Walter Lippman a quite influention journalist critic of the press Summary: Two Worlds of the Press The newspaper press had evolved from: being controlled by the government being a privillege of accepted and recognized government parties Becoming politically independent by being widley availible to and supported readers The birth of popular journalism (which Lippman call yellow journalism) toward the second half of the 19th century period of catering to the lowest possible denominartor The role of the press to seek truth through objective journalism Free Press John Milton "Aeropagitica" 17th century; made plea to Parliment for press free of political control for sake of the Truth 200 years later in America with the birth of the Penny Press in the 1830s Popular (Yellow) Journalism Sensational journalism with a motive to immediately satisfy the largest number of people First politically independant journalism Seeks to engage readers by being dramatic and episodic, reporting only events that will immediately engage readers Problems The novelty of the dramatic wears off Readers will eventually feel the need to be informed rather than amused people will crave news from journalism, not entertainment reporting "objectively, orderly, and comprehensively" will bring more success
