Review – Communication Lessons Ø Importance of Feedback. Feedback improves accuracy Feedback requires investment of time (and is thus sometimes unfortunately avoided) Supervisors must guard against ‘defensiveness’ when receiving feedback Employees may experience ‘stress’ when communicating with supervisor… reducing recall/understanding…and increasing the need for feedback. Ø Most Important Communication Skill: Listening Listening is ACTIVE process, not passive Listening requires conscious DECISION to listen: § Focus on the speaker [eliminate all distractions] § Ask non-emotional…non-judgmental…’clarifying’ questions (usually open- ended) § Restate what was ‘heard’…including ‘emotion’ [mirror back the communication message] When listening…avoid the tendency to ‘evaluate’ too early Use silence…be ‘REFLECTIVE’ not ‘REACTIVE’ Ø Emphasize ‘Adult’ Communication Style in the Workplace Be able to recognize ‘Parent’; ‘Adult’; and ‘Child’ communication styles.
