Yihong Shi Song of the South In the movie Song of the South , unique characteristics of slavery in antebellum society are well illustrated. The main character is called Uncle Remus by everyone. It is interesting that in the antebellum Southern society, “children spread their affection among their adult relatives” 1 . Since any kinship is fragile under the control of slave-holders, children will call people in their community “uncle” “aunt” or “brother” even if they are non-relatives. Because of the dispersion of plantations at that time, most slaves chose to run away or act against their owners in a day-to-day base instead of rebelling. This is also well illustrated by this movie. The little black boy called Toby brought a frog into his master’s house, which was definitely not allowed. While he was trying to catch the frog in front of Johnny’s mother, Toby was quite calm. It seemed that breaking the rule was not an abnormal thing for him. Furthermore, Uncle Remus helped Johnny cover his escape from the plantation, keep the puppy and handle
