What is a fête galante and how did this new genre of painting epitomize the attitudes of the aristocracy? An elegant excursion (fete galante) nobility would role play and dress up as peasants or shepherds. They would have a picnic out in nature, almost like they are experiencing normal life to spice things up. Weightlessness to their paintings and wistfulness. Cost a lot of money to role play and put country in debt. Escape from problems around them. Melancholy. definition: 'an elegant excursion,’ elegant outdoor festivals attended by courtly figures dressed inthe height of fashion --charming scenes touched with a mood of nostalgia that often verges on melancholy Nobility would go into the forest or elsewhere and dress like peasants, dance, play music, have plays performed, etc. They even hired performers to entertain them at times. Paintings of this genre were very centered in fictitious places such as Cicero and they would do things they could never do like stare into each others eyes, etc
