Be able to describe how the lives and the music of each of the following composers fit the Romantic model in terms of nationalism, virtuosity, the myth of the suffering artist, and autobiographical emotional expression: Paganini, Chopin, Liszt, Berlioz, Schubert and Wagner. Paganini: was abused as a child, comparable to Beethoven. He had double jointed hands and elbows, as a child he got so sick they thought he had died; he refused catholic last rites so he wasn't buried as a catholic. He was very skilled at violin and received grotesque myths and reputations. People believed that he must have sold his soul to the devil to be “that” good at the violin Schubert: died young and poor from tuberculosis and typhus. He suffered a lot because of his economic standing. Carried q torch at Beethoven's funeral, then died a year later. His friends said everything he touched turned to music. He wrote the song about the erlking. Wrote more than 600 lieder Chopin: he was fairly poetic in his piano music.
