Realism in Art and Literature, Tolstoy What specific types of people did Daumier caricature in his prints? Political parties. He made fun of them in his drawings. Tried to show their corrupt ways through humorous caricatures. What did Courbet mean when he said “show me an angel and I’ll paint one”? He only paints the concrete. Since he’ll never see an angel, he won’t paint one. What subjects did Courbet paint and what did he promote as the qualities of Realist art? He painted peasants, and the rural settings. He showed realism by painting things how they were- ordinary. How did Millet bestow a sense of spirituality and dignity to the peasant class in his art? Millet painting peasants in real life situations. He showed them doing work as is (not like rococo romanticizing their life) but making it more realistic. It becomes spiritual in ways showing these people valued their work. They held their work as worthy, or holy. Something to work for and get out of. he
