Unformatted text preview: Energy and enzymes Ch 4 Energy Review forms of energy, Laws of Thermodynamics. Remember: • Free energy (ΔG) = portion of a system’s energy available to do work. • Exergonic reactions release energy ( ΔG is negative ). Metabolic pathways Metabolism: The biochemical reactions that allow a cell or organism to extract energy from its surroundings and use that energy to maintain itself, grow, and reproduce. Catabolic pathways: Cellular reactions that break down complex molecules such as sugar to make their energy available for cellular work. Anabolic pathways: Metabolic reactions that require energy to assemble simple substances into more complex molecules. Endergonic = “energy in” Exergonic = “energy out” ATP couples reactions that release energy with reactions that require energy Enzymes are catalysts, enhancing rates of specific reactions Activation energy: Enzymes work best under specific conditions Glucose + Phosphate Glucose-6-Phosphate Substrates Products Some enzymes require cofactors (atoms/molecules other than proteins)....
