LETTER TO A SON OR DAUGHTER Letter to a Son or Daughter Rhonda Sandberg PSYC/231 April 2, 2012 Professor Holly Johnson April 2, 2012 Dear Daniel, Unfortunately, I have to go away for quite a long while, and I will not be with you during the changes you will be going through. There are some things that I would like to explain to you before I leave and I hope that you will understand them and remember them as you begin your journey into becoming an adult. It is a very important time of your life, and it can be one of the most memorable times of your life if you go through it with a positive attitude. You will be 12 years old this month and you have already started to go through some changes. This stage of your life is called “puberty.” Everyone goes through it, and believe it or not, I went through it myself, so I do understand. Some changes you will be experiencing can bring on doubts, fears, and anxieties (Santrock, 2012), however, you will be able to get past those if you look at everything in a positive way. During this time of your life (puberty), you will begin to notice changes to your body and also in the way you think. Puberty begins between the ages of 9 and 16 years old (Belsky & others, 2011), depending on the person and maybe depending on what their surroundings are. This is the reason that you have grown so much in the past few months and why your voice has deepened

LETTER TO A SON OR DAUGHTER tremendously, and also why you are getting facial hairs on your upper lip. My dear son, you are changing from a child into an adult. There are these chemical substances that are very powerful and flowing through your body right now and they are called “hormones.” All of a sudden these hormones decide to let loose inside of you and start turning you into an adult. When that happens it may seem to you that your world is turning all around, which in a way, it is. The way you think and act will become different. Things that seemed fun to you before will become boring and disgusting to you now. Going shopping with me or cuddling up on the couch with me will probably be something that you will no longer want to do. In fact, I may disgust you and embarrass you while we are in public. You will probably get very upset with me when I discipline you because while people are going through puberty they think that parents know nothing. I remember thinking that about my parents while I
