Darwinism or Variational Evolution: On Darwin’s The Origin of Species “When it was discovered that apes had been man’s ancestors, come authors went so far as to state, “Man is nothing but an animal.” However, this is not at all true. Man is indeed as unique, as different from all other animals, as had been traditionally claimed by theologians and philosophers.” Ernst Mayr: What Evolution Is , p. 252.

Creationism versus Evolutionary Biology • In Creationism one assumes that animals and plants are created in a single and unique act of creation. • From the point of creation species stay unaltered throughout millennia. The Biological Universe is regarded as static and unchanging. • The view takes literally the Bible’s description in Genesis of the origin of life. • In a week, God creates the Earth and its life-forms in unique acts. • From the Bible the age of Earth is calculated to be a few thousand years. • In Darwin’s Evolutionary Biology , one assumes that animals and plants have evolved from simple forms to still more complex forms. • A fossil record proves that on Earth there have lived entirely different species at different times than those that are known today. • The Biological Universe is never static, but always changing; species evolve, then become extinct and disappear, giving rise to new species, etc. • The evolution of a new species is gradual and takes thousands of years. • From the Geological records and carbon-analysis the age of Earth is calculated to be millions of year. Approximately 4,600 billion years. Evolutionary Biology does not necessarily entail Atheism . • God may still be the creator of life and the evolutionary mechanism. • The six days creation in Genesis can be seen as a poetic description of, a metaphor for, a creation-act that took hundreds of millions of years. Quotations “It is just as noble a conception of the deity to believe that He created a few original forms capable of self- development into other and needful forms, as to believe that He required a fresh act of creation to supply the voids caused by the action of His laws.” Darwin, p. 14 “The belief that the world was created by an Almighty God is called creationism. Most of those who hold this belief also believe that God designed his creation so wisely that all animals and plants are perfectly adapted to each other and to their environment. Everything in the world today is still as it was when it was created. This was an entirely logical conclusion based on the known facts at the time the Bible was written. Some theologians, on the basis of the biblical genealogy, calculated that the world was quite recent, having been created in 4,004 B.C., that is, about 6, 000 years ago.” Ernst Mayr: What Evolution Is , p. 4

Artificial Selection • It is the crucial assertion in Evolutionary Biology that the animal kingdom has been changing and is still changing. • Thus animal species must be in principle able to change from one
