What is Personality? 09:00 Psychologists ultimately study behavior- observable actions/character traits No context is strong enough to suppress your personality (opp. True too) Personality doesn’t change from situation to situation, your behavior changes from   situation to situation. P X S= B (personalityXsituation=behavior), reciprocal determinant   (personality feeds experience which feeds personality) Personality- an abstract construct to help predict behavior Identity/Differential Psychology- personality, abnormality, intelligence, outcomes:   predicting success and other life outcomes, causes of individual differences, other   abilities: multiple, practical, emotional, motivation and mood. Individual Differences At a GlancE: Area of psychology Looks at latent (unobservable) psychological constructs Such as intelligence and personality traits Measured/assessed through psychometric tests/inventories Which explain major differences and similarities  Between individuals To predict behavior in a wide range of settings And understand how and why people differ from one another Individual Differences The study of differences between individuals Not what is common to all people but what is different to ONE particular person i.e. obedience to authority, general rule but some are far more than others physique differences (height, weight, skin color, eye color) psychological trait differences

Exercise stage 1: Friend: best friend, priyanka.  She in outgoing, 19-year-old girl, who is very intelligent  and knowledgeable about many things.  She can easily make conversation with new  people and is not afraid to face the worst of sticky situations.  Around her close friends  she is absolutely crazy and fun.   Next to you: Alison- sarcastic, reserved unless around close friends, try to be  friendly/awkward at times, intelligent, self-aware, self-conscious  Traits as general predispositions to act according to interests, values, and preferences A) different people have different interests B) different interests determine different behaviors C) we are aware, as actors and observers, of these interests and behaviors D) people tend to act in consistent manners  Infer awareness and intention (prefs, values, interests) from behaviors Goals and Applications Predicting the differences between individuals, understanding them, and seeing  clinical/educational/occupational, and general implications Intelligence Being normal isn’t always desirable…intelligence: “ability to solve problems that  contribute towards his/her successful adaptation to the real world Assessed through tests (IQ) See the rest on the slides IQ is powerful and widely used for classification and selection of individuals/effective  (score compared to normal scores of most people) (more slide info)
