Southwest Asia – North Africa General Information This region is characterized by economic inequality and economic vulnerability. This is a region characterized by frequent territorial disputes and boundary frictions. The Sahara Desert is the physical feature that dominates the realm. This is a region where Islamism or Islamic Fundamentalism is on the rise. Economic Inequality - The term economic inequality refers to the substantial differences found among states within the region that have oil resources and those without this valuable natural resource. This concept of economic inequality can be furthered applied when observing those states that process oil. Among those that do process oil there is a stark contrast among states where the wealth and benefits of oil have trickled down to the general population and states where only the elite have benefited.
