STAGES OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT 2 Stages of Cognitive Development Infancy (1-2) ~ With in the first few hours an infant begins to develop adult-like hearing activity. From birth through the second year the child’s cognitive activities continue to develop; considerable improvement in visual activity especially within the first year. Early childhood (2-6) ~ During early childhood a child’s cognitive level in short; this attention span issue can make it difficult for a child to concentrate on one particular activity at a time. This is also a time in cognitive develop when a limited knowledge base hinders the way that child interprets a new experience. Middle childhood (6-10) ~ Middle childhood is full of huge cognitive leaps and bounds so to speak. During this cognitive developmental stage, an increase in the ability to attend to important stimuli and ignore irrelevant stimuli is emerging (McDevitt, & Ormrod, 2004, p. 201).
