INFORMATION PROCESSING THEORY 2 Information processing theory Information processing theory emerged in the late 1950s and early 1960s and has since A sensation is the detection of stimuli in the environmental. Sensations received from input in the environment like hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch are subsequently translated into new input that are more meaningful for cognitive processing. This is the first part of the information processing theory. The second part lies in the perception of interpreting environmental stimuli. The simplest interpretation of an environmental event takes time to evaluate new sensory date. This mechanism goes by a variety of names. (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2004); for this paper it will be referred to as the sensory memory. The first three of the components to information processing are sensory, working, and long-term memory. Their functions are the next topic of interest. Sensory memory processing is taking in information for very brief periods, usually on order of ½ to 3 seconds. With sensory memory what a person can remember is limited. For instance, the average amount that will be remember in a short period of time is five to seven components such as letters or the alphabet of images of people’s faces. So in one second, the average person could only remember on average five to seven letters of a word, sentence, or fragments. They can also remember five to seven components of a number, phone number, or address. Working memory and long-term memory are two other storage mechanisms used to process new input into memory. Most thinking on cognitive processing happens in the working memory. This is where problem solving on trying to comprehend what a person is reading occurs. From working memory, information can be processed into long-term memories. For

Working memory has short-term information holding whereas long- term information is in most instances, indefinitely. The definition of working memory is simple. Working memory is a multi-component
