1 How do we measure something as personal as a perception? Psychophysics : Study of the changes in reported perception (psycho) as a function of changes in the physical stimulus (physics) Psychometric function : plot of observer response as physical stimulus changes Psychometric Function 0 20 40 60 80 100 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Physical Stimulus Behavioral Response Main Questions: Detection : Minimum intensity we can perceive Discrimination : Ability to detect differences in similar stimuli Scaling : Intensity of the sensation IdentiFcation/Context : Placing a learned label on a particular sensation Determination of Absolute Threshold Vary Intensity of physical stimulus and measure yes/no response 3. Method of adjustment Subject adjusts up and down to just detectible level. Systematic Methods: 1. Method of Limits Gradually descending or ascending series of intensity steps Down usually gives lower threshold than up 2. Method of constant stimuli Various Fxed levels presented in random order each presented a number of times Psychometric Function 0 20 40 60 80 100 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Stimulus Intensity Percent Yes In all: Variability in threshold.
