Life Science 15: Concepts and Issues Lecture 9: Unexpected conflict, unexpected cooperation 2/7/12 I. inbreeding and unexpected cooperation II. mother’s love and unexpected conflict III. reciprocity instills us with a sense of fairness Reduce the perceived vulnerability of partners: - acknowledge debts clearly and concretely Receiving gifts/favors properly is as important as giving gifts: - thank-you notes are essential - acknowledgement of debts is essential - eye contact is essential - using names is essential Assurances of future reciprocity are motivating. Unexpected cooperation: 1. (ants, bees, wasps) - females diploid and males haploid - daughters: all get all of father’s genes and only get half of mother’s genes - coefficient of relatedness (r): o mother to daughter= .5 o female to sister= .75 o result: better to forego reproduction and care for sisters 2. naked mole rats - queen - non-reproductive workers - why? Br-C>0 - small pop. Size, all closely related and interbreeding When r is really large (as in inbred species), cooperation becomes extreme.
