Culture breaks down the fundamental reproductive equation Q: Why is our environment alien? What aspects of it make it so different from our environment of evolutionary adaptedness? [EEA] Agriculture, generate power and electricity How do industrialized societies differ from horticulturists and pastoralists? We don’t have the capacity to produce our own food We don’t have the capacity to produce our own medicine We’re dependent on others for this and: o Shoes o Contact lenses o Houses o Sanitation systems Today’s environment is alien. Very different from our EEA. What is culture? Transmission of information by extra-cellular means Culture can free us from biology o But does it? Q: Why does culture reduce the usefulness of our instincts? Because of culture and technology, we can no longer trust our instincts.
