Called themselves “anonymous society/corporation” QuickTimeª and a decompressor are needed to see this picture. ^^Claude Monet Impression, Sunrise , 1872^^ Term Impression: describe aims and practice of their art; term of derision Young painter *Start with the sketch- begins with utter challenge to skills og painting Form- new and original Break with the past- deskilling of painting Conscious rejection- they’d been classically trained Shift from history painting to landscape Monet knows he isn’t a figure painter- landscape/seascape Gives up the figuration of the body itself and along with it, storytelling Space of nature- acts of perception Visible brush stroke, painted on-site outside Embrace the unfinished, paint a sketch Act of a subject seeing and inscribing the vision itself
