International Business Chapter 4 Political Systems- a complete set of institutions, the relationships between those institutions and the norms that govern their function Functions of Political Systems: Focus on distributing power o Primary function o Necessary for groups to live together in an organized manner Ex: Driving on one side of the road Establish boundaries between groups o Borders from one country to another o Borders in job positions Include specified members o Right and privileges for specific locations o Who belongs in a specified political system and who doesn’t Governments’ Roles- Universally Agreed: Create and maintain a monopoly on violence o All power derives from violence o Protection from a power Regulate areas that might otherwise degenerate into violence o Personal property rights Tax o Payment of the protective services Governments’ Roles- Not Universally Agreed: Support areas of natural underinvestment o Schools for the young o Higher national income o More dynamic economy o Greater equality among people o General reduction in violence Support projects that require full citizen participation
