Problem: The aim of this lab is to investigate the light emitted by excited atoms to consequently comprehend the structure of these atoms. Summary of procedures and observations: Instruments: Spectroscope, power supply, gas tubes 1) A gas tube was taken and plugged into the power supply. 2) The power supply was turned on 3) Once electricity was running though the tube a certain type of light was emitted by the gas. The tube heated up, which suggests that energy was released. In order to investigate the emitted light a spectroscope was used. 4) The spectrum of the light was recorded. 5) Findings were checked with the spectral chart. These steps were repeated for 5 gases.

Additional Questions 1. Which has the greatest potential energy, electrons in inner electron orbits or electrons in outer orbits? The electrons in the outer orbit have greater potential than electrons in the inner orbit. This can be explained by the fact that they release more energy
