( (Groups/teams generally perform better under these conditions than individuals working alone) 0 1. Tasks becoming more complex: require greater diversity of input and goes beyond individual effort and knowledge 1 2. Tasks becoming more interdependent: cannot be performed by individuals alone 2 3. Need for more flexible labor force: things change rapidly, teams are more flexible than individuals 3 4. Need for faster response to change: adapt quickly, teams can respond more quickly than individuals with more resources But the cons related to groups/teams: 4 1. Coordination costs are inherent in groups/teams: people have to coordinate, share info, communicate- possibility of conflict, miscommunication, poor decision making 5 2. How to assure that coordination costs do not exceed the benefits of groups is the topic that all the following slides are going to be about. External condition 1. Larger Organization (look at the organization before looking at the team; explains a lot of the problems of the team; sets the context of what’s possible in the team) - Business Strategy: what kind of business, how to gain competitiveness, whether it is innovations or formalized, which dictates goals that teams pay attention to and the kinds of focus people in teams are going to have -Authority Structures: who reports to whom, who relates the team

from up to down -Formal Regulations: does it have formal regulation (formalized, efficiency), or innovation (flexibility and variation)? -Resources: organizational resources determine a lot of the resources that the team is having 0 -Personnel Selection Processes: how firm selects people for teams on personality, values, and fit (low barriers to enter: a lot of heterogeneity on the team; higher barriers to enter: more homogeneity) -Performance Evaluation & Rewards: rewarding individuals or team? If it is rewarding individuals, competencies between individuals may lead to problems of the team -Organization Culture: values, how to treat customers and employees; norm of the team is not radically different from the firm 2. Physical Setting: makes differences to be in a face-to-face team or a virtual team (people don’t see each other face to face) Group member resources 1. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: members that have task relevant knowledge and experiences perform better in general 2. Personality Characteristics: personality, background, and values- how well these fit together across members; more fit, less coordination cost Group structure: 1. Formal Leadership: leader’s behavior determines what happens in the team- autocratic or more considerate about the members? (It is a powerful impact) 2. Roles (behaviors in social positions): behaviors that are expected from people that hold certain positions-member, emotional leader, task leader; how to learn the roles: experiences from previous, observations, expectations, and learning
