Jewish communities are thrown out of one place, welcomed into a new place, thrown  out again…no homeland.  Most of these Jews were German, resided in Russia, Poland, after being expelled from  the Middle East Many Jews were bankers…Christians were not allowed to charge interest to one  another  Kingdoms welcomed Jews in order to build up their economies  1791—Catherine the Great She sees the Jews are creating a middle class for themselves  Sees the Jews threatening the feudal system  The Jews have to be expelled or convert to Russian Orthodoxy Forces the Jews into remote parts of land—“Pale of Settlement”  Shtetl… PLURAL:  shtetlech  Yiddish word for small city  Porgroms:  acts of terror. Destruction of Jewish property and attacks on the Jewish  people Created constant sense of insecurity  These communities became very isolated and religious because of the pogroms  Hope for the future: the messiah will come  Sabbatei Zevi: declared himself as the messiah Hassidism: Things will get better when the messiah comes, and when you die. Idea of
