1 Introduction to Linguistics Homework 2 (100 points) Due Wednesday, June 30 th at the beginning of class Part I 1. (20 pts.) Do Exercises A and B in chapter 2 of L&J (p. 48-49). You only need to write down the corrected version of the transcriptions. Treat them as broad transcriptions, even though L&J use square brackets [] in the exercises. Ignore the use of tie-bars ( ͡ ) in the transcription of affricates and diphthongs; i.e., treat / / as though it is / t͡ʃ /. 2. (14 pts.) What are the five laryngeal states that can be used to convey linguistic contrasts in the world’s languages? Only two of these states are used meaningfully in English words – which two are they? 3. (10 pts.) In order to be audible, certain consonant types require that there be higher air pressure behind their place of articulation (i.e., further back in the vocal tract) than in front of it.
