Question 1: Evidence of Speciation (4 points) During the course of the investigation to determine the classification of walking stick insects, a biologist observed two strikingly different coloration patterns in a population of walking sticks. Individual walking sticks are either striped or unstriped. Each pattern matches the pattern of coloration of the shrub in the walking stick habitat. This led the biologist to ask the question, do the two coloration groups represent a single species? Over a period of one mating season, the biologist collected a range of data about adults in this population. The data are shown below: a) Identifyone piece of pertinent data from the table above that could be used to determine the classification of the walking sticks as two species. Justify your selection of this data. (2 points) b) Describea second type of data not yet collected that could be used to answer the biologist’s question. Justify your selection of this type of data. (2 points) Question 2: Speciation (11 points) A booby is a type of seabird that lives in warm coastal environments. Boobies hunt ocean fish and make nests on shore. The booby has the unusual characteristic that its feet are bright blue, while the rest of its body is gray and black. Suppose a population of boobies becomes separated after a flood creates a major water barrier across the island. One group is very large (N= 1000) while the other group is very small (N= 25). The conditions on the two islands are quite different including the presence of many more predators on the island with the larger population. Neither predators nor boobies can move between the islands.
