Tocqueville – Democracy in America Author’s intro – stressed equality of condition, and stipulated it as an existing fact. Anyone who looks at European history – any important step was a step in the direction towards equality of opportunity. Impossible not to see this as unfolding. Nature, planets – see the hand of G-d – governing what’s happening, and he must approve of this historical development. He needs that term to crown it, and show how important and majestic this divine direction of history is. Patriotism – zealously. Not patriotic in the flag waiving sense. P 9 – equal love and respect of the laws, b/c they know that its nothing but something they have authored. The people make the laws, authority of the gov’t (not divine) will be respected. A quiet and rational persuasion. Allegiance – not an emotional belief, not some passionate belief in a myth, but a quiet rational persuasion. In our self-interest to keep the system.
