Daniel Eaker Response Paper 9 Section 18 The cold war in the mid twentieth century caused a fear among Americans that affected the way they lived and how they operated. The war directly impacted the lives of people living at home. This was a new fear, since previous wars had been fought in countries that were far away from the United States. The fear of the use of atomic weapons affected everyone living in the United States. They feared that at any moment, the Soviet Union would drop an atomic weapon that would destroy a city and kill millions of people. This fear changed how people lived their life but also changed the way the United States operated. The U.S. had to adapt to the new threat and in doing so, transformed society forever. The cold war was a war based on fear. Although no fighting ever occurred, the fear of an atomic weapon being used caused a panic in the United States. As seen in the introduction, “Communism
