Tuesday, March 4, 2008 Icons, Relics, and Iconoclasm Key Ideas and Terms Saints u canonization did not exist for the Byzantines u saints were just particular people in a particular place who were viewed by their local (religious) communities as saints Cult/Cultus u local devotional practices around a particular figure (local saint) u developed around the grave site of the person u created shrines, eventually developed small structures, and later churches Relics u religious artifacts u something a saint came in contact with – often clothing u actual bodily remains – bones Icons u images Iconoclasm o disagreement regarding whether or not icons are a legit part of the Christian faith, because veneration may go against 1 st commandment o condemned the use of all such images Iconodule o does not believe icons are a problem History of Icons Pre-Constantinian period Fourth through the sixth century u
