Michael Chelala Globalization and International Organizations Globalization and International Affairs Professor Liubomir Topaloff May 28, 2007 The increased emphasis on the global world and the de-emphasis of the nation-state has created an interesting situation in the world today. Within the anarchy of the global world, who has the legitimacy to lead? Many attempts to answer this problem are already underway, but some of the key players in this new political field are proving to be very unconventional. At the end of World War II, the world realized the need for some sort of intermediary body that would help prevent such a terrible catastrophe from ever happening again. The resulting organization was the United Nations. Although it is far from perfect, the United Nations has become a key example for what a global government might look like if one were ever established. One key problem with the United Nations is that it draws its funding and legitimacy from the nation-states, and holds no real legitimacy alone. That could be likened to the fifty states of the United States telling the national government what to do and how to do it. Although this system preserves the sovereignty of the nations involved, it doesn’t benefit the world as a whole. Just as the first government of the United States could not put down rebellions, the world government run by an organization like the United Nations would never be
