Objective: The objective of this experiment is to identify an unknown compound via the use of thin layer chromatography. Reaction Equations: None Procedure: Step 1: Using a pencil, draw a solid line 1cm from the bottom of a thin layer chromatography plate, and a dotted line 1cm from the top of the same plate. Step 2: Using separate capillary tubes, spot aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine right above the solid pencil line. Step 3: Lower each plate into the staining jar containing 3mL of the ethyl acetate/acetic acid solvent. Do not move the jar. Step 4: When the solvent reaches the dotted line at the top of the plate, remove the plate from the jar. Step 5: Using a pencil, mark where the solvent has stopped. Use a UV light to see the solvent more clearly. Step 6: Calculate the RF index of each spot. Step 7: Dissolve the unknown in a test tube with 95% ethanol.
