What is Criminal Justice Reform? Criminal Justice Reform in the United States is aimed at fixing perceived errors in the Criminal Justice System. Many people charged with crimes lack the resources to investigate cases or obtain the help they need, leading to wrongful convictions and excessive sentences, even in capital cases.
The Mass Incarceration Problem The United States incarcerates more people per capita than any other nation. Nearly two-thirds of inmates in America’s jails are awaiting trial. Since the official start of the War on Drugs in the 1980s, there has been a major spike of growth in incarceration. According to a fact sheet provided by The Sentencing Project: “1 in every 115 adults in America was in prison or jail in 2015.” “The 2015 U.S. incarceration rate of 670 people per 100,000 population is the highest in the world.
Impact of Mass Incarceration on Humanity Each year, the United States loses 87 billion in GDP due to mass incarceration. More than 4.5 million Americans can’t vote because of a past conviction. In 34 states, people who are on parole or probation cannot vote.
