Nhi Vu General Chemistry Agnes Rafoulko Boiling Point Determination Introduction: Boiling point is a property that is commonly used to determine the identity of unknown substances. In this lab, we will verify the identity of an unknown chemical by finding its boiling point. Chemical Responsibility: It is crucial to wear goggles at all time during this lab, due to the usage of chemicals and Bunsen burners. After using any chemical, it is necessary to dispose of the waste in the proper, labeled container. All broken glass must be thrown away into the proper waste box to prevent any form of injury or hazard. Report Sheet: Materials : Thermometer Beakers Ice, water Bunsen burner Capillary tubes Procedures : 1. Calibrate the thermometer by measuring the temperatures of an ice bath and boiling water. Compare results to the correct temperatures according to the day’s atmospheric pressure. Draw a calibration curve if thermometer shows any errors. 2.
