Nhi Vu General Chemistry Agnes Rafoulko Determination of a Simplest Formula Introduction: In this experiment, we will take a known mass of magnesium metal and convert it to magnesium oxide. Through a series of procedures, we will determine the mass of oxygen in the compound. Using this information with the known mass of magnesium used, we will be able to find out the molar ratio and accordingly find the simplest formula of magnesium oxide. Chemical Responsibility: Heating magnesium metal too strongly in air will ignite, producing an intensely bright flame that is damaging to the eyes. Thus, it is crucial to heat slowly with a small flame and to wear safety goggles at all times. After completing the experiment, the magnesium oxide must e disposed in the bottle labeled WASTE. Report Sheet: Materials : Crucible Magnesium Procedures : 1. Heat the crucible and cover for 5 minutes, then allow cooling for 5 minutes. Weigh and record its mass.
