PROFESSIONAL CAPSTONE AND PRACTICUM REFLECTIVE JOURNAL2Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective JournalBasically, nursing is a profession that relies on practices to equip an individual or students with the necessary skills and experience to undertake various responsibilities. In this regards, nursing students have to participate in practicum and capstone projects that can enable them to link the classroom knowledge to the real world. The most notable benefit of engaging in practicum and professional capstone activities is that it provides an opportunity to gain real life experience. In my case, I had my practicum in a health facility that provided care to the oncology population, which also influence my professional capstone that focused on preventing CAUTIs among this population. During the entire period, I kept reflective journals on different areas of knowledge that I gained that affected my practice.New Practice ApproachesIt is evidently clear that engaging in my practicum and capstone project provided me with an opportunity to learn and develop new skills and knowledge related to the nursing practice in catering for the oncology population with a healthcare setting. According to Love and Rodrigue (2013), most of the healthcare-associated infections, especially UTIs that affectthe oncology population arise due to the nursing practices involved. In this regards, during my practicum and in undertaking the activities of my capstone project I realized that the procedures and protocols that the nursing staff use in handling catheters in the population wasa leading cause of these UTIs. As such, I gained a new approach to practice by following the recommendation of Love and Rodrigue (2013), who suggested that catheter maintenance procedures was vital part of the nursing practice. Thus, I recommended that nursing practice in my capstone project should adopt the use of a standardized bedside audit tool to monitor the status of the catheter in a patient. In essence, I was able to learn about new nursing approach to practice that could help to prevent CAUTIs among the oncology population.Interprofessional Collaboration
PROFESSIONAL CAPSTONE AND PRACTICUM REFLECTIVE JOURNAL3The significance and importance of interprofessional collaboration within the setting of a healthcare is another concept that I was able to learn in my practicum as well as in my undertaking of the capstone activities. In this case, I learned that the process of caring and ensuring positive outcome for the patient depends on various members of the hospitals, including nurses, physicians, pharmacists, dieticians, and at times social workers. These professionals are in charge of various services offered to the patient to ensure the facility provides holistic care. According to Herm-Barabasz (2015), interprofessional collaboration
