Oluchi Nwankwo RE: Discussion 2 - Week 2 COLLAPSE Description of the Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems The Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems serves as a framework to assess families because it was created to effectively connect research, theory and practice. It is also an effective tool for relational diagnosis of families because it integrates three dimensions which are family cohesion, flexibility, and communication (Olson, 2000). Cohesion “Family cohesion is defined as the emotional bonding that family members have towards one another” (Olson, 2000). There are also different levels that define how close family members are with one another which are disengaged, separated, connected, and enmeshed (Olson, 2000). In the case of the Cortez family it is evident that Paula’s cohesion with her family is disengaged because she is living apart from her son Miguel since he is full time student in college and working at a job.
