Lab Report Instructions for Expt 15: Diels-Alder Reaction: 9,10-
Dihydroanthracene-9,10-a,b-succinic Acid Anhydride
The objective of this experiment is to understand the role of an aromatic ring system as a diene
substrate in the 4+2 cycloaddition reaction. Anthracene is the diene and maleic anhydride is the
dienophile, which will undergo a 1,4 addition by the activated denophile across the 9,10 position
The procedure was followed as described in Mayo, pages 269-273,
with the modifications in the posted Canvas document. Additional modifications to the
procedures include the following.
83 mg Anthracene instead of 80.
39 mg Maleic Anhydride instead of 40.
