Restavec Chapter 1 Setting: Haiti Language: Creole, French - Blanc (white person) - Papa = white Florence lover Florence: maman, Negress Eric: little boy about Bobby’s age Bobby didn’t like his maman, he wanted to have Eric’s maman. Bobby’s biological mother died = worked in Philippe’s coffee factory Florence son = Denis (living with grandmother to attend private school) Philippe= Florence’s white former lover. Paid money to Florence to take care of Bobby. Angella, Amelia , Matilda= cooks Bobby slept under the kitchen table. Florence did not take care of Bobby. Restavec (staying with) = slave child, usually were not allowed to go to school. Girl restavec’s were used as concubines for owner’s son and if they got pregnant, they were kicked out. 8-10 yrs old Chapter 2 Florence worshipped Erzulie and other voodoo spirits. She thought they would bring her wealth. Bobby could go to public school after he finished his chores which was his advantage over other Restavecs. Florence didn’t buy any clothes or materials for him.
