Residential tenancies legislation What is the purpose of residential tenancies legislation? Landlord and tenant legislation, or residential tenancies legislation as it is now usually referred to, was one of the earliest forms of consumer protection legislation (see Table 33.5). Queensland has passed the Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act 2000, which replaces the Auctioneers and Agents Act 1971 and became law on 1 July 2001. It gives more protection for consumers who buy or rent from licensed agents and dealers. It affects motor dealers, real estate agents, auctioneers, restricted letting agents, property developers, commercial agents and pastoral houses.
