The enzyme is a component of the gut mucosal defense system which functions in the detoxification of lipopolysaccharides, as well as the prevention of bacterial translocation in the gut. Based on the name of the gene, it is not surprising that it is localized to the plasma membrane of the tissue in the small intestine. In agreement with its location, ALPI is highly expressed in CACO-2 cells which are continuous epithelial cells.
