ID Terms: 1) Fundamental Attribution Error : This is the error people make when they attribute someones actions/behavior to their values (we have been talking about this in the context of their cultural values, as in what country they're from) instead of the situation that they are in. 2) Giri : This is the type of obligation or debt that must be repaid in equal value (not necessarily monetarily). It also must be repaid within a certain amount of time. 3) N = k problem : This is a type of error people make when trying to understand another culture, especially when they try to explain someones actions or a certain situation. It is the error made of giving one explanation for a case/situation that isn't applicable in more than one cultural context. 'N' stands for the number of cases to be explained and 'k' stands for the number of explanations. If we only look at one case and one explanation, that is when N = k, then we can always explain everything. But in reality the same one case in different cultural contexts could have different explanations, therefore k as an explanation needs to be applicable to more than just one cultural context. For example, we can say that Japanese high school students have higher standardized test scores than students in the US and South Africa. One explanation for this case could be that Japanese students have more resources/material available to them so they are better equipped to succeed on tests. This explanation is probably true when comparing Japan and South Africa (so N = k), however it probably isn't true when comparing Japan and the US (so N doesn't equal k). 4)
