Investigating Termites and Chemical Trails Introduction Being that termites are limited by sense of sight and hearing, their main source of communication is identified by smell, leaving chemical trails through pheromones to track food sources. (Grace 1995) Such trails are left through foraging and excrement. Ink chemicals are similar to the chemical trails left between termites for communication. In this experiment, we tested what attracts the termites more when comparing a pencil and ink trail. The initial hypothesis was that the termites will stay on the pen ink trail significantly longer than the pencil trail. The independent variable was the presence of ink, while the dependent variable was the total time spent on each trail.
