Fortune 500 Company Project Google, Inc History of Google Google began as a research project in January 1996 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two students who had graduated with their Ph.D. from Stanford University. They started out with an idea that a search engine that analyzed the relationships between websites would work a lot better than the exisiting sytem, which was ranking websites in the order of the number of times they were clicked. Their so called “search engine” was nicknamed “BackRub” because the engine cheked backlinks to estimate the sites relevance. But soon after they needed a real name instead of just a nickname, instantly the pair thought of Googol. The name "Google" originated from a misspelling of "googol", which refers to the number of 10 100 . The domain google.com was registered on September 15, 1997, and the company was incorporated as Google Inc. on September 7, at a friend's garage in Menlo Park, California. The total intial investment raised for the new company came to be about $1.1 million. Larry Page and Sergey Brin originally wanted the domain name to be googol.com but was already registered to a Silicon Valley engineer and was not looking to sell the domain. The pair then settled on Google which was at first a misspelling of the world googol. In September 1998, Google Inc. opened its door in Menlo Park, California.
