Constitution Packet April 2007 I. Massachusetts Constitution 1. The town of Concord objected to having the legislature write a constitution for Massachusetts because the purpose of a constitution is to protect the people from the government and if the legislature wrote it then there would be no security against the encroachment of the government upon the rights and privileges of the individual. 2. Creating the Constitution of Massachusetts involved the following steps: 3. The chief author of the Constitution of Massachusetts was John Adams. 4. A “civil body politic” is formed by the voluntary association of individuals. It is a social compact in which the whole people covenants (promises) with each citizen, and vice versa, that all shall be governed by certain laws for the common good. 5. Three civil rights guaranteed by the Constitution of Massachusetts include the right to choose, check, or reject officers of the government, the right to keep and bear arms for common defense, and the right to assemble in a peaceable and orderly manner and to petition the legislature.
