GSC  20/03/2008 11:54:00 Refractive Index RI = speed in vacuum/ ….. Effects of refractive index 1. path of light is  refracted (bent) when passing btwn substances w/ different  RI’s 2. Critical angle o Light rays approaching an interface at an angle greater than the  material’s critical angle are  reflected (bounced back) instead of  refracted o Depends on RI… diamond’s  high RI makes it especially good at  capturing & focusing light o Gem faceting design… To  maximize the brilliance of a gem, cut facets so that as much  light as possible is internally reflected & focused back out  through the top of the stone (“ crown”)  towards the eye of the  viewer Don’t want light rays “ leaking out” through the bottom of stone  (“ pavilion”) Maximizing brilliance of a gem is all about  geometry
