Tiffaney HurstHITT 1303L2.1Describe eight characteristics of urine discussed in Chapter 15 and why each is important.1.Color- The color of urine can range frompale yellow to gold, depending on the concentration.Dark urine usually has higher concentration.Gold or dark urine may be a sign of dehydration .Medications and food can also change the color of your urine.Foods like blackberries or beetsmay turn your urine pink. Pink urine may also be a side effect for antibiotics used to treat UTI’s.Cloudy urine may have protein and could be a sign of kidney problems. It is important to beaware of the different colors of urine, different colors may be a sign of a health problem.2.Clarity-Urine is usually clear.A foamy/cloudy urine may contain bacteria, pus, or a specimenthat has been present for more than and hour. It is important to recognize foamy/cloudy urinebecause it may be a sign of a urinary system condition.3.Odor- In my opinion normal urine doesn’t really have an odor. If I smell urine it’s a red flag forme. If I smell just a small amount of urine I drink more water. If that does not help I will make anappointment with Physician. Knowing the smell of urine is important because foul smelling urinemay be an indication of a condition or disease.4.Specific Gravity-Norman urine contains a specific gravity of 1.003-1.030.
