There are not many types of music that are similar to opera. Yet I believe we have studied some musical styles that share some striking characteristics to opera in class. I attended a famous opera at the Kimmel Center known as the Requiem Verdi, a Roman Catholic music composed in the memory of an Italian poet. During the performance, I noticed a number of similarities the opera had with Corsican paghjella and Tuvan throat singing. Before discussing these similarities, I will describe the musical style of the Requiem Verdi in more detail. The piece was composed by Giuseppe Verdi in the late 1800s in memory of an Italian poet, Alessandro Manzoni. It is set in a funeral mass-style opera for four soloists, double choir and an orchestra.
