Biological Basis of Health and Disease Exam 4 Review  1. What does lung compliance refer to? The ease with which the lungs that can be inflated or the  amount of pressure needed to change their volume. 2. How does the presence of a nasogastric tube impair coughing? by preventing the full increase,  intrathrasic pressure needed for an effective pause. 3. Describe the occurrence of turbulent air flow in the lungs. it occurs regularly in the trachea,  decreases when the air flow is low, causes many of the breathe sounds of the stethoscope.  4. What is the function of the larynx? Speech conducting air between the atmosphere, the respitory  tissues of the lung, and protecting the lungs from inflation of substances other than air. 5. How does intrapleural pressure relate to intrapulmonary pressure? Normally intrapleural pressure  is normally negative in pressure.  6. Define pleural effusion. The abnormal collection of fluid in the pleural cavity. 7. How would the diffusing capacity of the lung be impaired because of a decrease in surface area? If  you remove it surgically. (surgical removal of the lung) 8. What happens during localized vasoconstriction? the LVOL oxygen levels drops low 60 mm Hg  9. What are factors that affect the matching of ventilation and perfusion? The amount of death air  space and shunting. 10. What is an anatomic shunt? One in which moves directly from the venus to the arterial sides of  the circulation without moving through the lungs.  11. What causes pneumonia? S Pneumoniae. 12. What does the PO2 levels of the blood indicate? Oxygen that is dissolved in the plasma. 13. How is most of the carbon dioxide that is produced as a result of tissue metabolism? 790, 791
