Unformatted text preview: Student Name: Amatullah Truman and Eisenhower At this point you know a great deal about the beliefs and actions of America’s first two Cold War presidents, Harry Truman (1945 – 1953) and Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953 – 1961). Complete the following chart to compare how Truman and Eisenhower addressed the each issue listed in the first column. Truman Eisenhower Truman adopted a foreign policy of containment towards the Soviets, as Truman never trusted Stalin. His attitude to the soviets were not polite, but rather aggressive. Truman had opposed intervening in Iranian affairs. Eisenhower accepted Truman's doctrine of containment. Even though he preferred secret deals he was willing to defeat the Soviet Union at any cost. The space race was a race to see which philosophy would achieve the dream of the Space flight. Eisenhower intervened in the Iranian Affairs. Similar, although both Presidents followed the Truman Doctrine of containment, Truman oppressed intervening in Iranian affairs ,while Eisenhower didn't oppose but intervened. Attitude toward Communism and Containment Truman assured the U.S. that they would help every country resist communism in order to prevent it from spreading. Truman leapt on the opportunity to take a strong stand against the Soviet Union. Eisenhower also wanted to banish communism from the world no matter what it took, he also had a very positive attitude towards the policy of containment. Similar, both presidents had a positive attitude towards containment and negative attitude towards communism. Use of Military Force and Technology Truman had to use a way to get Japan to surrender, he later sent his bombers to drop two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He believe that this would help them to surrender and save their lives. Obviously it wasn't a great idea as it killed many innocent citizens. But alas the Japanese surrendered. Eisenhower claimed that nuclear weapons were rather necessary as a deterrent to military threats. A significant number of nuclear bombs were invented under his administration. Similar, although the inventions that were made during each of their presidencies, both presidents made new weapons and used them to deter communist nations.
