Why Should We Be Moral?Immorality is the morality of those who are having a better time.—H. L. MENCKEN,A MENCKEN CHRESTOMATHY(1956)12.1. The Ring of GygesBook I of Plato’s Republic“Gyges, a poor shepherd, found a magical ring that when worn and twisted will become invisible. Gyges used the ring for his own good and took advantage its power. He then becomes the new king after robbing the palace, seducing the queen and murdering the king.” –Glaucon-“Behaving immorallycan sometimes be to one’s advantage”>>doing immoral things are natural to humans (we cannot deny it) especially now that we are imprisoned by money, sex, power, religion, internet, and etc. In the case of Gyges, he was a poor man who got his luck from a magical ring. Taking advantage of something is immoral, but sometimes people tend to do things immorally in order to survive and escape from poverty or other circumstances.QUESTION :According to the definition, lying is immoral. What if we lie about something to protect the people? Is it still an immoral act?-“Moralityplaces restrictions on us that we may not like” >> We can’t have everything that we like. If we do, life would be in chaos. People tend to like the same things and sometimes what we like may not like by others. It is like a cycle that will repeat over and over.
QUESTION : According to the definition of morality, it says that behaving morally should be beneficial to the society. Is lying for the sake of the society a moral act?
