1 Name: Aimee Hobbs Course: UNV-108-0500 Date: June 7, 2020 Instructor: Dr. McCabe Dispositions Essay Introduction/Thesis In class we have been discussing Professional Dispositions of Learners; the Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE); and skills, traits, or attributes of effective teachers. This essay will go over why Professional Dispositions of Learners is important in educational settings; how the Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE) has been applied to classroom practice with examples from educational experiences; the skills, traits or attributes I have seen demonstrated by effective teachers from educational experience; and the skills, traits, or attributes that I feel I need to work on and develop in order to be an effective teacher. Dispositions are the values, commitments, and professional ethics that influence behaviors toward students, families, colleagues, and communities. They also affect student learning and achievement, motivation and development, as well as an educator’s own professional growth. If held sincerely, these dispositions should lead to actions and patterns of professional conduct (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). The Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE) was developed in order to make sure that current and future educators understand how their decisions, both professional and personal impact the safety and well-being of children along with the culture and mission of the school. The goals of the MCEE are to ultimately reduce the number of ethical violations in
2 education and keep children safer in classrooms (National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, 2015.). What skills, traits, or attributes make an effective teacher? Why are the Professional Dispositions of Learners and the Model Code of Ethics for Educators important to a college student and future educator? Professional Dispositions of Learners The Professional Dispositions of Learners is made up of ten elements. The ten elements are High Expectations, Respect for the Diversity of Others, Fairness, Professional Conduct, Reflection, Compassion, Advocacy, Dedication, Curiosity, and Honesty. These Professional Dispositions are important in educational settings because they are standards that teachers are held to and influence classroom dynamics like student learning and achievement, motivation and development, and professional growth of the educator. One of the dispositions of learners is Advocacy. The Professional Disposition of Learners reads, “ Educators should promote positive change in schools and communities that benefit the welfare of others ”. Advocacy is described as teachers understanding the effect of community involvement and servant leadership as it applies to others’ welfare in an educational setting. Advocacy is demonstrated by building positive relationships with students, talking to students about things happening outside of the classroom, taking time to understand student issues and concerns, helping students find solutions to their
